My question: How are the motifs of light and dark used to convey similar themes for the poems belonging to Marisol and Marisombra?
So for the appreciation of writers choices, do you have to talk about why the author chose to use certain techniques? For example, in my essay, should I talk about why Neruda chose to use the motifs of light and dark to express his themes?

In fact I think that might ruin the flow of your essay, but that of course is a very case-by-case basis. That's the easy question done.
Now, about "appreciation". Honestly that's really a BS word to use in a criterion, but it wouldn't be IB if it wasn't, hey? I'm pretty sure you do need to explain why you think Neruda used light and dark. Basically I think what you've got at the moment falls under "satisfactory"; you've shown how light and dark represent love or rebirth or life or whatever applies, but you haven't explained why.
